Milton

Milton, Georgia is a highly sought-after place to live due to its consistently high ranking for quality of life in the state and region. In 2011, just five years after becoming a city, Milton was rated as having the highest quality of life in Georgia and the ninth-highest in the southern United States.

The city is named after John Milton, a Revolutionary War hero, and was previously part of Milton County from 1857 to 1931. Today, Milton is located in Fulton County and is represented on the county commission.

One of the most historical locations in Milton is the Thomas Byrd Sr. House, also known as the Hopewell House, located on Hopewell Road. The house dates back to at least the mid-1800s and is now home to Milton's Senior Center, run by North Fulton Senior Services in partnership with the City. If you're interested in learning more about Milton's history, you can join the Milton Historical Society, an independent group dedicated to preserving the city's history.

Milton became an officially incorporated city in 2006, following a process that began in 2005 with the formation of a citizens' committee to assess the feasibility of incorporating the unincorporated northern part of Fulton County. The Georgia State House and Senate approved the creation of Milton on March 9, 2006, and Governor Sonny Perdue signed the bill into law on March 28. In July, voters approved a ballot referendum on the incorporation by a wide margin, and on August 4, Governor Perdue appointed a five-person commission to serve as the interim government of Milton. The city officially adopted the existing county ordinances on December 1, 2006.

The City of Milton is dedicated to providing a range of events and programs for residents and visitors. The Community Outreach and Engagement staff coordinate special events throughout the year, often in partnership with local businesses and non-profit organizations. These events are made possible through revenue from the city's Hotel-Motel Tax and sponsorships.
